Implants (via specialist referral)

Implant DentistryWhether due to injury, accident, or periodontal disease, at times a patient’s original teeth may no longer serve their purpose, either by causing pain in everyday activities, or aesthetic imperfections causing discomfort.

Ordinary dentures or bridges may be uncomfortable for some patients, or may even be impossible in the case of poor ridges, gum sore spots, unhealthy adjacent teeth, or a natural disinclination to affect adjacent teeth in the preparation process.  In these cases, Dental Implants can be a perfect permanent solution.

Dental Implants are frames or posts, made of surgical grade metal, which are positioned within the jawbone of the patient, beneath the gums. Once surgically installed, these implants allow our dentists to surgically mount a patient’s replacement teeth onto them, forming a secure and permanent connection.

There are two types of Dental Implants considered safe by the American Dental Association.  These are:

  • Subperiosteal Implants – Consisting of a metal frame, fitted below the gum tissue onto the jawbone.  Posts attached to this framework will protrude through the gums, allowing our dentists to affix the permanent artificial tooth or teeth.
  • Endosteal Implants – Rather than on top of the jawbone, these implants are implanted directly into the jawbone.   On the healing of the surrounding gum tissue, a post is affixed to the implant.  Once the post is secured, our dentists can affix the permanent artificial tooth or teeth.

In order to be eligible to receive implants, it is vital that a patient has healthy gums and adequate bone to support the structure.   It is also extremely important that excellent oral hygiene standards be maintained and regular dental visits be scheduled so that the longevity and vitality of the gums and surrounding tissues and bone can be looked after.
